Lesley is inspired by the natural world, especially the sea and the sky. The coastline of Britain is a never-ending source of material for her, with a new vista around every headland.
Light, time and tide add to the variety of scenes she tries to capture.
Colour is all-important for Lesley. She prefers to sketch outdoors in pastel to quickly capture the fleeting effects of light and atmosphere. Back in her studio at home in Edinburgh, she uses these sketches as a starting point for her paintings. Choosing knives over brushes, she applies thick layers of oil paint to canvas or panel, with the resulting impasto adding another dimension to her paintings. She hopes to capture the beauty of the great outdoors
