Katherine’s image of ‘Dune Walkway – Alnmouth’ (2013) was selected as the publicity image for the tenth Alnmouth Arts Festival in 2014. The Festival featured an exhibition of Katherine’s most recent oil paintings, depicting Alnmouth beach and its numerous man-made structures. This years Festival attracted a record-breaking 3500 visitors.
Katherine’s paintings portray the defensive qualities of her coastal environment which is eternally trying to protect itself from human invasion and the natural prevailing elements. The formidable North Sea is ever-present within each composition, her oil paintings and watercolours reveal her fascination with the line where sea meets land – land in the form of harbour walls, groynes and concrete tank traps. With bold blocks of colour she captures the tension between the horizontal expanse of water and the vertical structures that it meets. Over the years she has gained a reputation for capturing the dramatic light of the North East which she effectively utilises to emphasize the structural qualities of her chosen man-made forms.
